CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Abilene Christian teammates Borja Cortes and Nicklas Wingord each won their semifinal matches in three sets Saturday, setting up an all-Wildcat final in Flight 1 of the Steve Baras Classic hosted by UT-Chattanooga.
In advancing to the finals, sophomore Wingord knocked off top-seeded Elliot Barnwell of Samford, 6-2,5-7,6-1, while on the other side of the bracket, junior Cortes defeated his second seeded opponent in as many days, beating third-seed Fares Kilani of Samford, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (0), 6-4.
Cortes will meet Nicklas Sunday following Cortes' 8:30 a.m. consolation doubles final with partner Guilherme Gesser. The Wildcat duo today beat the Eastern Kentucky tandem of Junjo de la Llera and Alex Alvaro, 9-7, to set up Sunday's match vs. UTC's Pasha Grigorjevs and Jorge Varon.
In other singles matches today, Jason Proctor lost in the Flight 3 semifinals to Rob Mitchell of Lipscomb, 6-1, 6-2, and sophomore Marco Bensley was eliminated by Samford's Liam Sullivan in Flight 4, 6-0, 6-3.
Proctor and freshman Nico Agritelley also lost today in the Flight 2 doubles semifinals, 8-6, to Joao Silva and Conner Huertas of Eastern Tennessee.
In women's action from the Rice Invitational, freshman Erin Walker improved to 7-2 this fall after winning the Flight 4 championship over Laurence Pelchant of Montana, 6-4, 6-1. The title is the first of Walker's career. She previously reached the third round at Midland when the season started two weeks ago, and advanced to the quarterfinals last week at Boise State.
Elsewhere in singles, Kaysie Hermsdorf beat UTA's Angeles De Los Rios for the third-place title in Flight 3 singles, 6-3, 6-1, but Emily Conrad lost hers to Jessica Birowski, 6-4, 6-2.
Scores from Micah Hermsdorf's third-place match in Flight 1 as well as two of ACU's doubles matches were not available as of 10:30 p.m. Saturday night. Micah Hermsdorf and Brittney Reed today played in the Flight 1 semifinals vs. a team from Northwestern State, while Conrad and Ansley Boarman were in a consolation match vs. Texas State.
The Wildcats return to action in three weeks for ITA Regionals, which are being hosted this year in Fort Worth, Texas.
