-- Hardin-Simmons' baseball team
allowed an unearned run in the sixth inning and it was the only run of the game
in a 1-0 loss to Howard Payne on Friday afternoon at Don Shepard Park in
Both pitchers were
brilliant in the game. Corey Howie went the distance and improved to 4-3 on the
year for Howard Payne. He scattered five hits, walked one and struck out eight.
Eric Zamora was
equally as good. He allowed four hits and two walks and struck out five in eight
innings of work. He allowed just the one unearned run.
In the sixth inning,
Colton Buzzard led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Joshua Martinez then grounded back to Zamora for the second out. Carlton Brown
followed with a sharply hit ball up the middle that Marcus Uechi fielded to the
back hand side and he tried to make a jump throw that sailed over the head of
first baseman Troy Nicholson into the HSU dugout allowing Buzzard to score.
Jon Finney had two
hits for HSU and four different Yellow Jackets had one hit each.
The Cowboys are now
21-16 on the year and 7-9 in league play. Howard Payne improved to 20-18 overall
and 6-10 in ASC action. HSU needs one win on Saturday to claim a postseason
berth. The doubleheader starts at noon.
