ABILENE, Texas — Texas-Tyler jumped out to a big early lead and HSU never recovered in an 83-55 loss in American Southwest Conference women’s basketball action at the Patriot Center in Tyler on Saturday afternoon.
Kourtney Holyfield hit a pair of 3-pointers early for HSU to give the Cowgirls a 6-5 lead at the 17:02 mark. HSU then went nearly seven minutes without a basket and
UTT pushed the run out to 16-2 and took a 21-8 lead on a Taylor Murphy layup with 9:45 to play in the half.
The Patriots ran the lead to 42-17 at halftime.
The Cowgirls played much better in the second half but the deficit was too much to overcome. HSU hit 10 3-pointers in the game, including four by Holyfield. The freshman led the Cowgirls with 12 points.
Murphy led UT-Tyler with 26 points and Brittany King added 11.
HSU had 24 turnovers in the contest and UTT converted them into 28 points.
HSU is 1-5 on the year and 1-2 in league play. UTT improved to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play. The Cowgirls will not have a game during the week because of finals and return to action on Saturday at 5:30 (because of graduation) at the Mabee Complex against Howard Payne.
