The District 2-5A favorite Cooper Cougars make the trip north to take on Class 4A Wichita Falls Rider. The Cougars are not ranked in the Texas Football top 25, but they are one of the magazine's dark horses to make a run in the playoffs. The Cougars offensive front 5 will have to help carry the load while the rest of offense and defense jell. the Rider on the other hand is ranked 8th in the state, and went to the Class 4A semifinals in 2012. Cooper won last years season opener, 43 to 36. Cooper quarterback Lorenzo Joe had over 200 total yards in his debut under center.
The Wylie Bulldogs open the season in a game that is not only a Top Match Up for the Big Country, it is one of the best games of the week in the state. The 8th ranked Bulldogs are at home to take on the 4th ranked Argyle Eagles. The Bulldogs are doing their usual reloading, so this will be a great test for many new starters. Argyle comes in loaded. They return 14 starters from a team that went 3 rounds deep last year. Wylie won last season's game in Argyle, 31 to 14 on their way to an undefeated regular season.
The Anson Tigers and the Hamlin Pied Pipers are another one of our Top Match Ups for Week 0. Anson came out of no where last year to post a 9 and 1 regular season, and they open 2013 ranked 7th in Class A Division 1 with most of their starters back. They will get a strong test right out of the gate in the opener of the Champions Classic at Shotwell Stadium from Hamlin. The Pipers come into the season will some confidence. They are expected to get back into the playoffs again this year. The Tigers and Pipers played an excellent game last year in the 1st week of the year. Anson eeked out a 25-20 victory. Look for another good one to start the year on Thursday, August 29th.
