Abilene First Responders Get Trained For Mechanical Heart

Abilene's First Responders get trained on how to treat a mechanical heart.
Normally, training at the Taylor County Law Enforcement Center consists of self-defense and safety for others.

Wednesday's training was a little different.

Employees got a unique kind of training, all to benefit a special lady who is also an employee at the Sheriffs Office.

Ten years ago, Shelia Pinkston was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, which made even something as simple as walking difficult.

In January Pinkston's heart failed and doctors at Medical City in Dallas performed open heart surgery implanting a left ventricular assistance device.

Without the device, Shelia would not be able to survive.

Personnel from the View Volunteer Fire Department and EMT's were all in attendance as Shelia's Trainers from Dallas explained what to do if her device were to malfunction.
