"Memorial is like the open to the busy season," said Dawn Capps. Capps said they expect a large crowd to come through this weekend. "This weekend is gonna be a pretty big weekend for us," she continued.
One attraction that won't be open this year is their pool, but Capps said they won't let that discourage visitors from coming by. She says, "The pool's not going to be open this summer, we're getting it repaired and fixed, it will open next year in 2015."
But Capps said not to worry, they have plenty of other activities lined up for nature lovers and first timers alike. "We have hikes that I do, we have other programs lined up, and we have dances once a month," she said.
One of their most popular activities "Dance Under The Stars" is also local favorite. "Now we do them once a month and the Muddy Creek Band comes out and plays for us and in fact we have one going on this weekend," she said.
Capps said don't let the pool closure discourage you from visiting the Abilene State Park, and perhaps, this might be your opportunity to give a nature walk a try.
"Taking a hike to our Buffalo Wallow, it's a little pond off our nature trail and a lot of people don't take the time to go and enjoy it," said Capps. "It's really nice, natural, ground fed pond and so a lot of people regret not making the hike out there to see it."
Whatever the case, Capps said they hope to see people from around the Big Country come and take advantage of this hidden treasure.
