ACU Softball Swept by Incarnate Word

SAN ANTONIO – ACU's venture into the Southland Conference got off to a sour start Saturday afternoon as Incarnate Word swept a doubleheader from the Wildcats in conference softball action at Cardinals Field.

SAN ANTONIO – ACU's venture into the Southland Conference got off to a sour start Saturday afternoon as Incarnate Word swept a doubleheader from the Wildcats in conference softball action at Cardinals Field.

The Wildcats gave up three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 7-6 loss in the first game, and then immediately gave up three runs in the bottom of the first inning of the second game on their way to a 7-3 loss.

ACU (10-17 overall and 0-2 in the Southland) and Incarnate Word (12-15 and 2-0) will finish off the three-game set Sunday with a single game set to start at 1 p.m.

Game 1 (Incarnate Word 7, ACU 6) -- The Wildcats trailed 3-1 going to the top of the fifth before they exploded for four runs to take a 5-3 lead. Game 2 (Incarnate Word 7, ACU 3) – Mosley, who took the loss in the first game, was tagged with the loss in the second game to fall to 2-9 on the year. She gave up 10 hits and seven runs (four earned) in 5 1/3 innings as the Cardinals scored three runs in the first and three in the sixth to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Zepeda had two hits and a pair of RBI for the Cardinals, who had 11 hits, three hitters take walks and saw two players hit by pitch.

Incarnate Word jumped on Mosley for three runs in the first inning, saw the Wildcats bounce back with single runs in the second and third innings, and then put the game away with a run in the fourth and three in the sixth.

For the Wildcats, Ashley Nolan and Taylor Brown each had a pair of hits, while Brown had two RBI.

ACU cut the UIW lead to 4-3 in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Brown and had a chance to tie the game at 4-4, but saw Nolan thrown out at the plate on a single by Madison Buckley, ending the inning.

Null gave up a run in the sixth to make it a 6-4 ACU and then ran into trouble in the seventh as she ran out of gas. After giving up a run in the seventh, Null's 133rd and final pitch of the day resulted in an out when Alex Zepeda was caught stealing at the plate on a double-steal attempt.

Peyton Mosley then came into the game and gave up a bunt single, an RBI double to Christy Trevino to make it 6-5, an RBI squeeze bunt by Danielle Ramirez to tie the game at 6-6 and a two-out, two-strike RBI single to Kellen Robles to end the game.

Each of the first three hitters in the Wildcats' lineup – Paige Stevens, Lyndi Smith and Courtney Flanary – each had two hits and Flanary drove in a pair of runs for the Wildcats.
