Anson Is Looking For A Deeper Run In The Playoffs

The Anson Tigers surprised pretty much everyone a year ago with a ten win season and a return to the postseason for the first time since 2006.

Now with 10 starters returning on the offensive side of the ball, including quarterback and 2013 player to watch Jalen Garza, the tigers want to take care of some unfinished business this season.

"Obviously we have a lot more confidence coming into this season. Especially with so many guys coming back, and we really just hit the ground running," said head coach Keith Woolf. "It's a big part of our success from last year and they're all back but we've got to have some leadership. We can't just be satisfied with last year's performance."

The Tigers also return both running backs Mitchell Hudson and Matt Villanueva this year, as well as an experienced offensive line. That means the Anson offense could once again be a threat in 2013.

"They had a good off season. They know what to do. They have their head in it and they're not missing any assignments right now. It's been real easy on me," said senior quarterback Jalen Garza. "We should have a good run game. We'll be able to do a lot of play-action and have defenses guessing on what we're going to do. We should have a real potent offense this year."

Expectations are high this year in Anson and if the Tigers are going to live up to those goals, they'll need to stay hungry.

"We have to fight complacency every day. We talk about it with our kids, we'll talk about it before we go to every practice. We'll talk about not getting complacent, staying sharp, and learning to build as the season progresses," said Woolf. "We felt like we left some games out there. We have some unfinished business from last year and we're working every day to try and accomplish those goals."

Anson will open the season at Shotwell Stadium against the Hamlin Pied Pipers on August 29th at 7 p.m. as part of the Champions Classic.
