Drive down any street in Abilene and it's easy to see portable signs on the side of the road advertising for businesses. Many businesses in the Key City have used them for years to attract new customers.

The city council have been working on a sign ordinance for the past 8 years. With more pressing items for the city council to attend to, the sign ordinance was pushed back. But in recent years people have been asking the city council about them. There is already an ordinance that is agreed upon, except for one thing; the portable signs.

Some people say they are ugly and shouldn't be allowed, while others say they help advertise for businesses and generate new customers. The city council will vote on whether to restrict the signs or not. At this time there is no set date when the ordinance will be discussed.

One business in Abilene hopes the signs stay. Dave Kelly, manager of Knights Carpet, says that their sign helped generate 50% more foot track in the month of May. He says they leave their sign up 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; to get as much visibility by consumers as possible.

Kelly says, they may not be the most attractive thing on the side of the road but if they drive in people, then that in turn helps the sales tax revenue in Abilene.
