The bicyclist struck by a vehicle Saturday afternoon on North 14 and Mockingbird has died from his injuries.
The bike rider has been identified as Jesus Tijerina, 64.
Below is a release sent out by the Abilene Police Department detailing the incident:
On Saturday, April 12, at approximately 4:57 p.m., Officers of the Abilene Police Department’s Traffic and Patrol division responded to a call of a major vehicle collision in the 1400 block of North Mockingbird.
First responders arrived on scene and located the involved vehicle, a silver 2006 Ford Taurus, and a white bicycle.
The investigation revealed that the Taurus was driven by Dallas Murphy age 35. The bicycle was being ridden by Jesus Tijerina age 64. Murphy was traveling South in the outside lane of 1400 North Mockingbird, while Tijerina was traveling West on North 14 attempting to cross Mockingbird and failed to yield right of way to the Ford Taurus. The driver of the Taurus attempted to avoid Tijerina by braking heavily and swerving to the left. The driver of the Taurus was unable to avoid the collision, and the right front of the car struck the bicycle and the rider. Tijerina was transported to Hendrick Medical Center with life threatening injuries. Murphy was not injured. Jesus Tijerina died Sunday night at Hendrick Medical Center.
At this point in the investigation alcohol and speed of the vehicle are not believed to have been a contributing factor. More information may be released as the investigation allows.
