Cancer Survivors Honor Their Dogs Through 'Furry' Event

Runners and their four-legged friends gathered at Nelson Park early Saturday morning for the 2nd Annual Bark for Life event.

The gathering is the dog-friendly version of Relay for Life which will take place next month. According to the event chairperson Rebecca Ivey, the reason for the event is to give survivors a chance to honor their dogs. In many cases, some survivors say their canine pets helped them through their battle with cancer, Ivey says.

"My goal is for my children to not hear the news that they or their mother will have cancer," Ivey said. "This is the reason I fight."

Ivey adds that she hopes to see Bark for Life grow each year and possibly reach the same status as Relay for Life.
