SAN ANTONIO -- Incarnate Word pitcher Dylan Boss tossed seven effective innings Friday afternoon at Sullivan Field as the Cardinals knocked off ACU, 4-3, to clinch the final Southland Conference series of the season for both teams.

The loss drops the Wildcats to 17-32 on the season and 6-17 in the Southland, while the Cardinals improve to 17-32 and 8-15. ACU will have one last chance to pick up a win in the series when the teams play their final Southland games of the season at noon Saturday.  After the game the Wildcats will head west to Arizona for their final four games of the season: a single game Tuesday at Arizona State and then a season-ending three-game set at Arizona (Friday-Sunday).

Incarnate Word got 11 hits and all four of its runs off ACU starting pitcher Garrett deMeyere, who was fairly effective against the Cardinals. deMeyere struck out five Cardinals against just one walk, but was tagged with the loss to fall to 4-8.

The Cardinals led just 2-1 going to the seventh when they got two runs, including one on a throwing error on relief pitcher Nate Cole, whose pickoff attempt at first base resulted in a runner scoring from second base. Slade Brown immediately followed with an RBI double to make it 4-1.

But ACU got two runs back in the eighth as Aaron Draper led off with a single -- his third hit of the afternoon -- and scored on a Tyler Eager triple to right-centerfield. Eager then scored on an RBI groundout by Brandon Grudzielanek to make it 4-3. But reliever Brandon Cogbill got out of the eighth without any further damage and then turned it over to Matthew Decker, who worked around a two-out hit by pitch to keep the Wildcats off the board and record his first save of the season.
