ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University director of Athletics Sam Ferguson has announced that longtime War Hawks’ head cross country coach and assistant track coach David Chandler has taken on the additional duties as the Director of Compliance for the school. Chandler will oversee athlete eligibility and adherence to NCAA guidelines as major components of his enhanced responsibilities.
“When we were considering the right person to handle an important task like this David’s name became an obvious choice,” Ferguson said. “He has proven to be a hard worker, diligent and has an impeccable reputation among his peers. Few are more dedicated to seeing McMurry become a model NCAA Division III program than he.”
Chandler took over as the War Hawks cross country program's head coach in 2003, while concurrently serving as the distance coach for the McM track team. Chandler has been on McMurry's coaching staff since 2001 as an assistant to both track and cross country.
He is just the second head cross country coach in school history, following his mentor Bill Libby, who founded the program.
“I am looking forward to taking on the compliance responsibilities,” Chandler said. “And I am eager to continue serving my co-workers and McMurry’s athletes well.”
Chandler graduated from McMurry in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in multidisciplinary studies, with an emphasis in secondary history and physical education. He received his master's degree in sports recreation management from Hardin-Simmons in 2002. He also serves as a teacher in the Kinesiology and Servant Leadership departments at McMurry.
Chandler is married to the former Janet Bohling. The couple resides in Abilene and has a son, Michael.
