City Spring Break Camp:Fun for Kids, Great Value for Parents

City of Abilene's Spring Break Camp for kids is fun, and takes stress off parents.
Spring Break is usually a time of year that most kids look forward to, and while many parents are glad for their children to have a break, this week of vacation can cause some stress too.

"It would be probably something I look forward to more if there was something for the kids to do." says mom Stephanie Johnston.

"I like the more relaxed schedule of spring break and then coming up with summer break, however it is a little more stressful because we have to juggle either babysitters or ask family to help us out with arrangements." says mother of two, Randi Jones.

The City of Abilene Recreation department is making an effort to make school breaks a little easier on the parents. Jeff White, who is the City Recreation Administrator, says that "This program is important because it helps meet a need that we feel is essential. We'd rather have the children enrolled in our program than sitting at home, not having anything to do.

This Spring Break camp was designed after the city received feedback from parents. Just three years ago, there were only twenty kids who participated, last year there were around forty, and this year they had to cap it off at seventy-seven children.

Children are fed lunch, play outside, play in the gym, and do arts and crafts each day of the break from 7:30am until 5:30pm. The camp only costs fifty dollars per child, per week, which is a price that many parents say cannot be beat.
