Cougars Defense Becoming a Turnover Machine

Cooper's defense struggled early in the season, but those struggles seem to be in the past.
Cooper's defense struggled early in the season, but those struggles seem to be in the past.

One of the reasons they are getting better is because they are forcing turnovers.

In the last 3 games, the Cougars have forced 10 fumbles and recovered 8, and they intercepted a pass.

Those 9 turnovers have resulted in 3 relatively easy wins over Abilene High, Midland High, and Tascosa.

Cooper's Josh Hale said, "It just happens through the course of playing. We do a drill every Monday and every Tuesday. It's just ripping the football out. Doing that in practice every Monday and every Tuesday, it shows up on Friday night's."

Nick Russell added, "Our 1st goal is to secure the tackle, and then, just go for the ball. (We) just hack at it, strip at it, trying to get it out. Our mentality is to go out there every single series and get a 3 and out, and if we can make it shorter by getting a turnover it's good for us."

Cooper tries to keep forcing turnovers on Friday night against Odessa Permian. Cooper is riding a 5 game winning streak. Permian is 2-3 in district play.
