Cowboys Continue To Roll In Win At Louisiana College

PINEVILLE, La. — Charles Sams hit a 3-pointer with 16.6 to play to lift the Hardin-Simmons men’s basketball team to an 80-76 American Southwest Conference win at Louisiana College on Thursday night at the West Fieldhouse in Pineville, La.
 
The Cowboys fell behind 11-3 early in the game but used a 19-5 run to take a 22-16 lead with 10:20 to play in the first half and never trailed again. The Cowboys pushed the lead out to as many as 17 and led 47-34 at halftime.
 
In the second half, LC continually chipped away the whole half and finally cut the deficit to 71-69 with 3:29 to play.
 
The Cowboys then went to Derrick Jefferson who scored a layup and then after forcing a LC turnover Jefferson hit a pair of free throws to give HSU a 75-69 lead with 1:22 to play.
 
Doc Welch then hit a 3-pointer for LC with 1:05 to play and after an HSU turnovers Kevin Lewis scored a layup and was fouled with :47 to play. He missed the free throw and Jefferson yanked down the rebound in traffic.
 
HSU worked the clock down and Jefferson spread the floor kicked to John Barnes in the left wing, who swung it one more pass into the left corner and Sams, scored his first points of the second half and hit his fourth 3-pointer of the night with 16.6 to play and essentially sealing the win.
 
Jefferson led the Cowboys with 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Sams added 16 points and John Barnes added 14.
 
Kevin Cottonham had 21 points and 10 assists to lead five LC players in double figures. Doc Welch had 14, Raheem Regis had 13, Steve Evans scored 11 points and Kevin Lewis scored 10.
 
HSU is now 13-7 on the year and 13-4 in league play. LC fell to 9-9 overall and 9-7 in conference play. The Cowboys return to action on Saturday at Mississippi College at 3 p.m.
