SPRING BRANCH, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’ men’s golf team fired a season-best 295 and is in fourth place after the first round of the Alamo City Classic at the par-72, 6,872-yard River Crossing Golf Course in Spring Branch.
The Cowboys are nine strokes off the pace set by Concordia. The Tornados shot a two-under 296. Texas-Tyler is in second place with a 290, Texas Lutheran is third at 292 and Southwestern is right behind the Cowboys at 296. Schreiner shot a 305, UT-Brownsville 308 and host Trinity shot 313.
Freshman Sam Rogers led the way for the Cowboys. He shot a 1-under 71 and is in a tied for fifth place, five strokes off the lead of Concordia’s Jack Cersosimo who fired a six-under 66. HSU Junior Brandon Heard shot an even-par 72 and is in 10th place overall.
Freshman Austin Prior shot a 75, junior Ryan Hughes a 77 and junior Sean Aleman was the throw away scored with a 79.
The teams will play 18 holes on Tuesday. HSU is in contention and looking for its first team championship since the 2003 season.
