The Mavericks narrowly escaped the first round with a three-point victory over Class 4A Princeton in the first round on Friday. That would set up a match-up with fellow Big Country team, Brownwood in the round of 16.
Both Sweetwater and Wylie would be eliminated in the first round of the bracket. Sweetwater fell to Chapel Hill 39-33 in double overtime, ending their first trip to the state tournament in College Station.
Wylie would also fall in a thriller. The Bulldogs would come up just short against China Spring by the count of 34-32.
In the second round, Eastland would hold off Brownwood to advance to the quarterfinals. Then the Mavericks would escape a one point affair with Kountze to advance to the semifinals.
Eastland would find themselves matched-up against one of the top private schools in the state, Plano Prestonwood Academy.
The Lions would jump out to an early lead, but a touchdown pass from Josh Gosnell to Matt Majors would tie the game. Prestonwood would retake the lead a short time later, but the Mavericks would continue to fight back. This time with a Gosnell touchdown pass to Easton Sanderson.
The two teams would enter halftime tied, but Prestonwood would go on to pick up the 31-20 victory and advance to the state finals.
Graham would defeat Prestonwood in the championship game, and become the first team in state history to repeat as champions.
