Elizabeth Smart to Speak in Abilene in September

Smart's 9-month-long kidnapping ordeal captivated the nation over a decade ago, when she was just 14. She is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the Alliance for Women and Children's 12th Annual Fall Luncheon.

News Release from the Alliance for Women and Children:

The Alliance for Women and Children is pleased to announce Elizabeth Smart as the keynote speaker for the 12th Annual Fall Luncheon on Thursday, September 18, 2014. This yearly fundraiser helps support the mission of the Alliance for Women and Children to provide quality programs to empower all women and children by educating and assisting women to be health conscious and self sufficient and providing a nurturing and safe environment for school aged children.

The abduction of Elizabeth Smart was one of the most followed child abduction cases of our time. Elizabeth was abducted on June 5, 2002, and her captors controlled her by threatening to kill her and her family if she tried to escape. Fortunately, the police safely returned Elizabeth back to her family on March 12, 2003 after being held prisoner for 9 grueling months.

Through this traumatic experience Elizabeth has become an advocate for change related to child abduction, recovery programs and National legislation. Elizabeth triumphantly testified before her captor and the world about the very private nightmare she suffered during her abduction, which lead to conviction.

“Elizabeth Smart is an advocate for the safety of our children and we are pleased she is able to join us,” says Becky Frost, Fall Luncheon Chair and member of the Alliance Board of Directors. “Elizabeth’s book My Story is about overcoming adversity and her message is one of hope and strength. This is sure to be a sell-out event.”
