The honor, in its sixth academic year, recognizes student-athletes that achieve a higher level of academic achievement (a 3.20 grade-point average or better) while competing as a starter or important reserve on their team. From that list - limited to one nominee per school in each ASC championship sport - the sports information directors from the conference's 14 member institutions vote on a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete from each sport.
MEN'S BASKETBALL - Jorden Young
A Social Studies Composite major, Jorden Young played in 22 games for the Yellow Jackets this season averaging 1.8 points per game. A sophomore from Ponder, Texas, he scored a season high nine points versus Sul Ross State going 3-for-3 from behind the arc.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - Kayla Scott
A four-year letterman, Kayla Scott has played in 91 games for the Lady Jackets scoring 440 total points. She was hit 79 three-pointers with a .297 career shooting pct from behind the arc. She has hit four three-point buckets in a game four times in her career. From Azle, Texas, Kayla scored a career high 23 points this season versus East Texas Baptist which earned her an ASC West Division player of the week award. Her undergraduate degree is in Secondary Education graduating in the spring on 2012. She is about to complete her MBA and is a three-time Academic All-Conference selection.
BASEBALL - Houston Holmes
Houston Holmes is an Exercise and Sport Science major with a 3.88 GPA and should be a repeat Academic All-Conference selection this season. In 2012, Houston was an Honorable Mention All-West Division selection at third base leading the team in doubles with 10. Last year, he was named HPU's Distinguished Scholar-Athlete for the highest GPA among male junior and senior student-athletes. A Brownwood, Texas native, he was also named to the ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete team for baseball in 2012 and was an ASC Medal of Honor winner this year. This semester, he received Howard Payne's award for Outstanding Exercise and Sports Science male student and was the prestigious Paul J. Cunningham Memorial Award winner.
SOFTBALL - Katie Poerner
This season, Katie Poerner led the team in at bats, triples and stolen bases (18 for 20). From Comfort, Texas, she is the HPU record holder for triples in a season with eight in 2012 and for a career with 15. She is also having her best season in the field with a .935 fielding percentage. In 2012, she was named the ASC West Division Player of the Year and to the ASC 1st Team All-West Division. Last season, she was also on ASC All-Tournament team. Majoring in Mathematics, she is a three-time ASC Academic All-Conference selection. She is also a member of the HPU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. In 2012, she was a member of the ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete team and this semester won her second Tami Pattillo Memorial award.
WOMEN'S TENNIS - Larissa Lynskey
A sophomore from Anton, Texas, Larissa Lynskey played number four singles and number two doubles, Larissa was 3-6 in single play and 3-6 in doubles action. The Biology major carries a 3.78 GPA.
Overall, 106 student-athletes from basketball, baseball, golf, softball, tennis and track and field were named to the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams.
