Gun Club and Lake Association: Trying to Reach a Compromise

The Abilene Gun Club has been at their current location for 50 years, but the Fort Phantom Hill Lake Association says that their future development plans do not include the range.
The area around Lake Fort Phantom Hill has never seen widespread development, but some lakeside residents are hoping to change that. Faith Gage is President of the Fort Phantom Hill Lake Association and is looking forward to the area she has called home for over thirty years to be developed.

One change that members of the lake association would like to see is the relocation of the Abilene Gun Club. "That was part of the problem of the gun club remaining is just you risk not being able to develop and its not just their land, its developing anywhere near the noise factor" explains Gage.

The Abilene Gun Club has been in its current location off of East Lake Road for five decades now and members say they were surprised to hear that the lake association did not want them there anymore.

One compromise that is being discussed is moving the gun range, which long time Abilene Gun Club member, Robert Kern, says the club is not opposed to. "We would be open, if the city maybe had some other property that they would help us with and help us relocate" explains Kern.

Kern says that the development is not the problem and that they are actually in favor of it. "We are not against the overlay, but we would like to maintain a place to go enjoy ourselves."

It was decided at the Planning and Zoning meeting that the issues regarding the development of the lake would be tabled until October. Between now and then, the two groups will have a chance to work together and find a solution that can satisfy everyone.
