Howard Payne senior tennis player Samantha Guerrero has been named the women's winner of the 2013-14 American Southwest Conference Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award, the conference office announced on Monday after a vote of the league's athletic directors.
RICHARDSON, Texas - Howard Payne senior tennis player Samantha Guerrero has been named the women's winner of the 2013-14 American Southwest Conference Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award, the conference office announced on Monday after a vote of the league's athletic directors.

Samantha Guerrero made school history being Howard Payne's first student-athlete to receive the ASC Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award.

"Sam is very deserving of this award. She displays the attitude and actions you expect from a player," said HPU head tennis coach Sally Brown. "She is always competitive and also very respectful of her opponent on the court.  She has impacted our program in a big way."

Guerrero led HPU with 10 overall wins in singles play and had a team-best 6-3 mark against conference opponents. On campus this year, she was a member of the HPU cheer team (2 years), a student intramural director (2 years) and a member of Delta Chi Rho sorority (4 years). In the fall of 2013, she worked at the Boys & Girls Club teaching three weekly dance/cheer classes to girls ranging in age from 7-18. In 2013, she was an honorable mention All-West Division honoree and second-team All-West Division in 2012. With a 3.24 grade-point average, she will be a three-time Academic All-Conference honoree at the end of the year.

"We are very proud of Samantha and her accomplishments at Howard Payne University. She is an outstanding young lady and very deserving of this honor," said HPU Athletic Director Mike Jones.

Zakk Revelle of Sul Ross State, the men's ASC winner this year, and Guerrero will now represent the American Southwest Conference on the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Sportsmanship Award ballot. The NCAA will announce the Student-Athlete Sportsmanship awards in July.

The ASC Fred Jacoby Sportsmanship Award honors a male and female student-athlete who best displays the attributes of sportsmanship, leadership, citizenship and academic integrity in their athletic, academic and life pursuits. To become a nominee on the conference-wide ballot, a student-athlete must win the ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year award in their respective sport. This is the 15th year the ASC has presented its Sportsmanship Award and ninth time the award is being presented after being renamed in honor of the Conference's first commissioner, Fred Jacoby.
