Lobos Rally Past Cowboys

ALPINE, Texas — Sul Ross State scored a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat Hardin-Simmons 5-4 in American Southwest Conference action at Kokernot Field on Friday night in Alpine.

ALPINE, Texas — Sul Ross State scored a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to beat Hardin-Simmons 5-4 in American Southwest Conference action at Kokernot Field on Friday night in Alpine.

HSU took an early 1-0 lead on a Brandon Walker RBI single in the third inning. The Cowboys added to the lead in the top of the seventh when Colson Craddick had a two-run single.

The Lobos, who had been held to no runs through the first six innings, got to freshman starter Jeremy Hallmark. Emmitt Crisp led off with a single and Jesse Loter walked. A wild pitch moved them to second and third and Ozzie Bueno grounded out to second to bring home Crisp. After a strikeout, Johnny Campos had an RBI single to chase Hallmark.

Matt Rhodes came on and the first man he faced was Josh Vasquez who delivered a RBI triple to right field and then scored on a balk to give the Lobos a 4-3 lead.

HSU tied the game in the ninth with a bases loaded walk by Walker. HSU was down to its last strike three times in the inning.

Hallmark went six and two-third innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Kyle Barnett worked a scoreless eighth and ninth. Before running into trouble in the 10th.

With one out in the 10th Connor Griffith had a single and after a fly out to right Eli Gallego singled. Closer Blake Northrop came on and hit Emmett Crisp and then Loter slapped a single to right to drive home Ryan Garibay, who had pinch ran for Griffith.

Trent Blackwater went eight innings for the Lobos and allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out five as he threw 128 pitches in the game. Hunter Flake allowed the tying run in the ninth, but worked a scoreless 10th for the win.

Vasquez and Crisp had two hits each for Sul Ross State and Walker had two hits for the Cowboys.

HSU is now 10-14 overall and 7-12 in ASC play. Sul Ross State improved to 14-12 overall and to 10-9 in the conference play. The teams will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
