Local Leadership Students Prepare for 925 Mile Bike Journey

A group of eight students and faculty are planning on riding bikes across the state. Their 925 mile journey will begin on May 10th.
After months of planning, the second Bike Ride Across Texas team is gearing up for a ride of their lives.

Director of Leadership Studies at Hardin Simmons University, Dr. Coleman Patterson, explains that biking across the state has been a dream of his for awhile. "Actually, I dreamed this up several years ago and actually presented it to students on the day that Michael Jackson died..it just took several years to get the right combination of people and time and opportunity".

While a 925 mile bike ride does not seem like a dream for just everyone, this group of faculty and students have been hard and work planning and training physically for the 10 day journey. "Its a lot of work. Its a lot of prep work and then you actually get out there and go and do it and you work all the way through, and at the end its like "lets just keep going" explains B.R.A.T. 2013 team member, Joshua Groves.

For Groves, the bike ride helped put textbook knowledge into perspective. "This class allows us to take the theories we actually learned about and then go out and put them into practice."

With just three weeks until the group arrives at the starting line, anticipation is setting in. Team members Colby Mears explains, "At this point, I am ready to go. I am sure as it gets within a few days, I will be like 'What am I doing right now?'.

Team member Amy Powell says, "I am both nervous and excited just because its so close and everything is coming together".

For some team members, this is more than just a bike ride. "For me at least, its kind of my step out there. This is what I am putting my goals at and this is how I am going to lead myself. I believe that you need to lead yourself before you can effectively lead others" explains Freshman team member, Colby Mears.

The group will leave Abilene on May 10th, drive to Brownsville, and begin their journey on May 11th. They are expected back in Abilene on May 20th after reaching their destination of Liberal, Kansas.
