RICHARDSON, Texas – McMurry University junior women’s pole vault specialist Mariah Steinbock has been elected to the 2014 Lone Star Conference All-Academic Team for women’s indoor track and field, it was announced by the league. Overall, 25 men and women were selected to the LSC All-Academic teams.

Steinbock is coming off of a second place finish in the women’s pole vault at the 2014 LSC Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend, for McM head coach Barbara Crousen’s War Hawks. Steinbock cleared a season-best height of 11’ 1 ¾”.

To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.30 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The All-Academic Team is selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league’s sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement.

Steinbock, a kinesiology major, has vaulted her way to the highest grade point average among McM’s team members, as well. On the academic front, Steinbock’s “classroom coach” is Dr. Cynthia Rutledge, chair of McMurry’s Kinesiology Department.

“What an outstanding student-athlete for the Lone Star Conference to recognize in this way,” said Rutledge.  “We in the Kinesiology Department have the pleasure of working with Mariah on a daily basis and appreciate the dedication she brings to the classroom.  Mariah quietly serves as an academic leader by challenging herself to succeed and stretch herself, just as she does in her athletic events. She sets for herself challenging goals and then dutifully and daily works to accomplish these goals.”
