Non-District Slate Prepares Buckaroos for District

Playing a tough non-district schedule is nothing new for the Breckenridge Buckaroos, and it very well may be a reason for their consistent playoff appearances.
Playing a tough non-district schedule is nothing new for the Breckenridge Buckaroos, and it very well may be a reason for their consistent playoff appearances.

A year ago the Buckaroos started the season 0-4 through the non-district portion of their season. They then rattled off four wins in district 4-2A Div. I, and qualified for the playoffs for another year.

Head coach Steve Freeman attributes that in part to a tough schedule that included playing two playoffs teams, and two Class 3A opponents.

"The key to it all is to continue to get better through the course of the season. You want to be ready when that first district ball game comes around, and then you want to be ready whenever that first playoff game comes around," said head coach Steve Freeman.

His players also see the rewards from continuing to improve week in and week out.

"Coach Freeman is the best at just keeping us focused throughout each week. He always says 'nothing's ever easy,' and 'nothing is ever given to us.' You've got to work hard for whatever position your in, or whatever game we're going to play," said Caleb Spoon.

"I think our kids understand that. They understand the fact that we're going to be the best that we can on this week, and we're going to be the best that we can and to be better next week., and move forward throughout the season like that," said Freeman.

The Buckaroos' next non-district opponent this week will be a resurgent Vernon team that is coming off a 35-14 win over Alts (OK) last friday night. Breckenridge is also coming off a 42-28 victory at Colorado City.
