LUBBOCK, Texas – McMurry University’s track and field team opened the 2014 indoor season at the Texas Tech Open at the Athletic Training Center. Day 1 of the event yielded some record-setting performances for head coach Barbara Crousen’s War Hawks.
Men’s senior shot put specialist Paul Davis – competing in his home town – got within 10 inches of his own school record of the event. Davis placed second overall in the shot, finishing behind Tech’s Kole Weldon who was last year’s NCAA Division I runner-up in the indoor shot, with an effort of 61’ 4 ¾”.
Desmond Williams was eighth in the long jump at 22’ 5 ¼”, while teammate Chris Ogle was 12th at a distance of 21’ 1 ¼”.
On the track, the distance medley relay quartet of Keon Mays, Victor Cruz, Lance Andrews and Scout Hale was fourth in a clocking of 11:05.33. Cruz placed 18th in a crowded 55-meter dash field in a time of 6.52 seconds.
Willie Poindexter reached the semi-final race of the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.00 seconds, for an overall ninth place finish. Chris Veail was 15th in the 55 hurdles (8.30) and also finished ninth in the high jump (6’ 4 ¼”).
In the women’s events, junior Tiana Alexander reached the semis of the 55 hurdles, posting a school-record time in the prelims at 8.34 seconds. Alexander was also 21st (out of 51 competitors) in the 55-meter dash.
In the women’s 600-yard run, senior Shanita Coleman established a school record in a time of 1:33.25, placing 22nd. The previous record of 1:34.77 was also set at Tech’s Athletic Training Center by Terren Marshall in 2010.
The women’s distance medley relay team – made up of Mary Affleck, Kirsten DeFrance, Paradise Hooper and Lauren Peery – was fifth overall (13:55.11).
In the women’s field events, War Hawks Mariah Steinbach and Sophie Southwell finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Steinbach cleared 10’ 11 ¾”, while Southwell’s mark was 10’ 0”.
In the women’s shot put, LaNissa Burns was 10th with a heave of 38’ 4”, followed by teammate Lara Williams in 11th at 38’ 0”.
The Texas Tech Open concludes on Saturday with a full slate of events.
