In that same news conference, Lubbock mayor Glen Robertson said, “He [McCartney] reached out and said I want to play in the hometown of Buddy Holly.”
“This is a historic day in Lubbock,” said Robertson.
McCartney first gained fame as a member of the Beatles. The world-famous band was named in part because of inspiration from Buddy Holly and the Crickets. Holly, a Lubbock native, had his own worldwide fame in the early days of Rock and Roll music.
Robertson said cooperation between Tech and City of Lubbock helped make McCartney’s performance in Lubbock possible. Chancellor Kent Hance made a similar comment about the cooperation.
