AUSTIN, Texas – Alfred Perez scored a game high 20 points and hauled in seven rebounds as McMurry University dashed past St. Edward’s University, 68-65, in Heartland Conference action Saturday afternoon.

The War Hawks stormed out of the gates early. Kourtney Goff (Rochester, N.Y./Southern Illinois University) hit a free throw with less than a minute remaining to give the War Hawks a 35-21 halftime lead.

Brandon Golden (Austin, Texas/Coastal Bend College) converted a layup at 17:06 in the second half to give McM a 17-point advantage – its largest of the night.

However, the Hilltoppers slowly clawed away at the War Hawk lead. Ramir Burton hit a 3-pointer at 5:38 remaining in regulation to tie it at 57-57.

Just when SEU (10-12, 6-8 HC) looked to capitalize, McM went on an 11-8 run and stayed one step of SEU to clinch the win.

“First half was a great team effort, but the second half there were too many mistakes,” McM head coach Clif Carroll said. “We made enough plays to win the game and that’s all that matters.”

The game plan was to go inside to Perez (Spring, Texas/Klein Collins HS) – and it worked.

“He was huge for us,” Carroll said. “He got some of their guys in foul trouble and his play opened it up for Brandon (Golden) and Kourtney (Goff) and our guards. It was just a really good all-around effort by Al.”

Golden added 17 points and was 5-for-9 from the field. Goff chipped in 11 points and Thiago Randazzo (Brasilla, Brazil/Impact Academy) helped out with seven points.

McM returns home for its final home stretch of the season. The War Hawks (11-12. 6-8 HC) welcome St. Mary’s University and Texas A&M International University.
