It looked like a promising start in the first inning when Stephen May launched a triple to the wall, but the Mustangs were unable to bring him home.
The Pirates would strike first in the bottom half of the frame and jump out to a 1-0 lead on a base knock by Braeden McCook. They would stretch their lead to 2-0 a short time later.
Sweetwater would hold the lead later on, but a late surge by Lubbock Cooper in the sixth proved to be the difference in a 7-6 ball game.
Game two of the series will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Sweetwater.
