'Share the Road' starts today

TxDot kicks off a campaign that raises awareness about motorcycle riders.
"I'm a cruiser, I'm not a speeder," said Ron Olsen.

He's been riding for nearly forty years.

Olsen said he once had to lay his bike down, because another driver didn't see him.

"I had the green light and the guy turned in front of me and if i hadn't laid it over he'd have run right over the top of me," he said.

Today TxDot is kicking off their 'Share the Road Campaign.' This campaign is designed to raise awareness about those we see the least on the roads, motorcycle riders.

According to LookLearnLive.org, the majority of crashes are the drivers fault.

They urge drivers to: "Look for riders.. then look again."

Ron also has some advice of his own..

"I recommend safety school," he said.

Abilene offers rider training and certifications for new riders.. or maybe even experienced riders who want to brush up on their skills.

Ron said no matter how long he's been riding on the road, there are rules he will never gloss over.

"Watch everybody," he said. "You have to learn to recognize traffic and the cars ahead of you behind you whatever, you need to learn to recognize which way they're going and what they're doing."

Olson also had this message for all riders out there, both beginners and advanced.

"Be careful and be safe."
