ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’ women’s basketball team used a big second half to beat Howard Payne 72-56 in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex on Saturday night.
The two teams slugged it out in the first half. HPU took an early 13-6 lead, but the Cowgirls responded with a 12-2 run to take the lead back at 18-15 with 5:05 to play in the half. Neither team led by more than two points the rest of the half and HPU took a 27-26 lead at the intermission.
HPU scored the first basket of the second half to take a 29-26 lead and HSU then put on a 12-2 run to take a 38-31 lead with 15:57 to play. Kayla Brown and Becca Chagnon hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the run.
The Cowgirls never trailed the rest of the night and pushed the lead out to as many as 20 at 68-48.
HSU outrebounded the Lady Jackets 47-32 in the game and had 15 offensive rebounds that led to a 14-6 advantage in second-chance points.
Sophomore center Sara Vargas had her best game as a Cowgirl with 15 points, eight rebounds and six blocked shots.
Lauren Thomas scored 14 points and they all came in the second half. Freshman Kayla Brown had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Taylor Klement had 11 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for HSU.
The Cowgirls limited the Lady Jackets to 34.4 percent shooting and HSU had nine 3-pointers in the game to just three for Howard Payne.
Britani Gattis led HPU with 16 points. Danyel Bradley and Shardena Hudson had 12 points each.
HSU is now 2-5 on the year and 2-2 in ASC action. Howard Payne fell to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in league play. HSU closes the fall semester with a game at Sul Ross State on Tuesday at 5:30.
