Sweetwater Mayor Resigns, Plans To Run For Texas Senate Seat

Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham has resigned to run for a Texas Senate seat.
From Sweetwater Reporter:

Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham has resigned.

"I am going to run for the District 28 Texas Senate seat just vacated by Senator Robert Duncan, who resigned last week to become the Chancellor of Texas Tech University," he said.

Under Texas law, a local elected official has to resign in order to even campaign for a state legislative office. Governor Rick Perry will call a special election soon that will take place in November.

Wortham resigned as Mayor of Sweetwater on Tuesday, July 8, and the Sweetwater City Commission has scheduled a Commission meeting for 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 15, to name the new mayor. The City Commission can choose one of the Commissioners, or they can choose another citizen of Sweetwater. That person will be mayor until the next mayoral election in 2015.

Wortham has been the Mayor of Sweetwater since 2007. He says he will launch a Senate bid after Tuesday morning.
