On Saturday night, former Wylie Bulldog Case Keenum got his opportunity to take the field with the second string, and he took advantage of that opportunity for the most part. Keenum would complete 11 of 18 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown to Lestar Jean before being replaced by last year's backup quarterback T.J. Yates.
Yates also had another solid performance on Saturday night against the Miami Dolphins, and capped it off with a touchdown of his own to tight end Garrett Graham.
Then less than 24 hours after the game ended, head coach Gary Kubiak said in a press conference he wouldn't make a decision on the backup quarterback until after the preseason was over.
“Exactly where it was when I left here last night, a few hours ago. Like I said, I said last night they both are making it real hard for me and that’s good for the team. They both are doing their jobs and doing it very well. Both of them played very good last night," said Kubiak.
"There’s still a lot of football to play. Matt [Schuab] is going to play the majority of this one. I’ll decide what I’m going to do after Matt later in the week. Obviously, we have a four day turnaround or a three and a half day turnaround so we might have to go to Dallas where those two guys are going to play possibly the whole football game. We’ve got a couple of weeks, but we have a nice problem right now. We’ve got three guys playing pretty good.”
At the same time both of the quarterbacks appear to be fine with the fierce competition for the backup quarterback position.
"That's not my job. My job is to go out there and play. I think T.J. [Yates] played really well and moved the offense really well. I think we're making the team better, both of us," said Case Keenum.
"You've got to go out there and perform if you're in a competition. It makes it that much more fun when you know you have to go out there and perform and you do. All the quarterbacks right now are playing great football. Throughout the depth chart we've been playing really well the past two games, and getting the win," said T.J. Yates.
The Texans will take the field for their third preseason game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday night in Houston.
