The father of the 2-year-old boy who drowned in an above-ground pool at a private residence on County Road 380 around 1:30 p.m. in Anson on Wednesday, June 4, has been indicted by a Jones County Grand Jury.

On June 5, Anson police and Child Protective Services (CPS) launched a joint investigation into the drowning of a 2-year-old Brendyn Garrett. Brendyn's father, Austin Garrett, who was allegedly in charge of the child at the time,  was later arrested and charged for the criminal offense of Abandoning/Endangering a Child, a 2nd Degree Felony.

Firefighters were called out to the same residence shortly after the drowning took place after a fire was reported. Investigators said the fire was related to the incident, but did not elaborate on how at the time.

According to the official indictment, Garrett is accused of leaving Brendyn unattended by the pool which was, according to the document, unsecured and thus exposing Brendyn to the likely risk of drowning.
