Witnesses say the pickup suddenly crossed the northbound lane and crashed into a large rock in the yard of a home on the 1000 block of Cedar Crest.

Hodge jumped out of the truck before it hit, telling police afterward that she noticed Bennett had become unresponsive and she was unable wake him or stop the pickup.

Both Hodge and Bennett were transported to Hendrick Medical Center for treatment, where Bennett was pronounced dead around 5:10 p.m.

Hodge, who had landed on the pavement after jumping from the pickup, was considered stable.

The accident is still under investigation and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
