Workforce Solutions Assist Employees Laid Off by Drilling Company

Former Ringo Drilling employees that were laid off nearly two weeks ago received some help Monday afternoon in finding work elsewhere.
They've been out of work for a week and a half, but the 200 employees that were laid off by Ringo Drilling in Tye received some help Monday afternoon in finding work elsewhere.

Around 70 employees that were laid off showed up to an information and hiring event hosted by Workforce Solutions of West Central Texas. There were more than a dozen employers ranging from the Taylor County Sheriff's Office to manufacturing companies at the event.

On Friday, Workforce Solutions contacted and invited oil and gas drilling related businesses to participate in the hiring event.

"We try to get individuals to the workforce as soon as possible," says Steve Collins, business resource consultant for Workforce Solutions. "Their skills will help businesses who are needing to fill positions soon."

Ringo Drilling informed KTAB News mid-February that the partners who own the company have decided to return 12 oil rigs to the lot and close the business. The decision impacted office staff and field workers such as Micheal Scoggin who moved from Oklahoma to the Big Country to work as a driller.

"I came down here for more of a stable job but it didn't work out that way," says Scoggin. "I'm back to where I was."

Many of the employees were shocked about the quick decision to lay off workers.

"I didn't think it was going to happen but it did so everyone's got to do what they have to do," former employee Jon McNabb said.

Collins said with the unemployment rate in Abilene at 4.4 percent, the need to find employees is important. As of December 2013, the rate is currently tied with San Angelo. The United States average is 6.5 percent.

The event was free open to other job seekers. To learn more about Workforce Solutions, call (325) 795-4200 or by visiting www.workfrocesystem.org.
