ABILENE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons’ women’s soccer team will look for its 11th straight American Southwest Conference Championship at the league’s championship tournament that will be held at the University of Texas at Dallas in Richardson this week.
The Cowgirls are the No. 1 seed in the tournament, but the hosting rights went to the No. 2 seed Texas-Dallas. HSU’s men’s team is the No. 1 seed as well and league by-laws do not allow one school to host both the men’s and women’s tournaments in the same year. The men have the right to host in odd years and the women host in even years. HSU had hosted the past 10 ASC Championships.
HSU will be looking for its 11th straight title and 16th overall ASC title. The Cowgirls are 13-1-1 on the season and ranked No. 10 in the nation.
The Cowgirls get a first round bye and will face the winner of the No. 4 Texas-Tyler (11-5-0, ASC 6-4-0) and No. 5 East Texas Baptist (6-7-1, ASC 5-4-1) game. The Patriots make their seventh consecutive tournament appearance and were the runner-up in 2012. The Tigers enter their third straight tournament. Texas-Tyler and East Texas Baptist play in game one Thursday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m.
No. 2 seed Texas-Dallas (9-8-1, ASC 7-2-1) enters its 12th consecutive ASC tournament. The Comets won the outright 2002 tournament championship and have played in seven title games. Texas-Dallas will get a first round bye and will face the winner of the No. 3 Mary Hardin-Baylor (13-3-0, ASC 7-3-0) and No. 6 Concordia Texas (6-6-3, ASC 4-4-1) game. UMHB is making its fifth tournament appearance and first since 2009. The Tornados make their fourth consecutive tournament.
