There are a few benefits to having your yearly check up at the dentist office before the new year rolls around. Dr. Christie Leedy with Abilene Dental stopped by Tuesday to talk about the financial and health importance of squeezing in your check up.

"You want to make sure you check your insurance benefits and utilize those because that $1,000 that you don't use just goes away," says Dr. Christie.

According to Dr. Christie, most insurance policies do not operate on what is known as a "rollover" plan, where your benefits carry on into the next year. Instead, as of the new calendar year, you could be losing all your unused coverage.

Besides the financial benefit to getting in that yearly check up, there are a few obvious health benefits as well. While just a quick glance is enough to detect some common dental problems, there are many serious issues just beneath the surface.

"Sometimes what people don't realize is what's behind the scenes," adds Dr. Christie. "That's why it's so important, all the X-Rays and the photos and everything that we take to look deep."

The consequence of not getting the inside glimpse into your smile? According to Dr. Christie it could mean losing teeth!
