Big Country roads and Abilene city streets turned into a sheet of ice, as expected, Thursday evening. And, with temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below freezing Thursday night and Friday, the ice will remain. Several wrecks had been reported by early Thursday evening. The freezing rain and sleet will combine off and on all night and finally come to an end fairly early in the morning on Friday. Low Thursday night near 20 (colder in northern counties) and highs near the mid 20's on Friday. Low Friday night near 14, high Saturday near 23. Another upper level disturbance will pass over the area Saturday and should bring more freezing drizzle or sleet, but not as heavy as what we're seeing now. It looks to be Sunday when highs should get close to 40 degrees. Another surge of cold then arrives for Monday and highs stay below freezing again Monday and Tuesday but we gradually warm into the 40's by Thursday of next week. Stay safe, don't travel if at all possible!
