For the host McM team, the wins and guarantee of advancing to the NCCAA national tournament could not have come on a better day. Just prior to the first serve to open the NCCAA regional, McMurry friends and faithful gathered for the dedication and the ribbon cutting for the recently-renovated Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center and the Charles A. "Chuck" Hutchinson III Memorial Classroom.
The War Hawks will have to wait until Saturday's conclusion of the tournament - and the final men's match between Dallas Baptist and Central Christian - to receive their championship banner at the post-tournament awards ceremony. However, the large throng of McMurry fans celebrated the two wins with the team after it closed out DBU in the nightcap.
McM had a dominating performance, not losing a set the entire day. The War Hawk line-up in singles - Chris Breaux, Felipe Cruz, Dani Perez, Preston Steblein, Christiano Mendes and Casjen Rico playing Nos. 1-6, respectively - lost just 20 total games, in the 24 sets played, between the two victories.
The doubles tandems of Breaux and Rico at No. 1, Cruz and Perez at No. 2 and Mendes and Steblein at No. 3 were equally in command. Versus Central Christian, Breaux and Rico were taken to 8-5 to get the win, but both of the others matches ended at 8-0. Against DBU, Cruz and Perez won 8-4 at No. 2, wile Nos. 1 and 3 were 8-2 War Hawk wins.
