KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The McMurry University volleyball team finished with a 1-1 record at the first day of the 2013 National Christian College Athletic Association Division I National Championship.
In the afternoon session the War Hawks toppled Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.) University 26-24, 25-18, 27-29, 23-25 and 15-12 to win the five-set marathon.
Trailing 6-5 in the fifth set, Kasi Conners’ kill jump-started a 5-0 run and the War Hawks were up 10-6 before a RWU timeout.
The Redhawks scored two quick points out of the timeout, but the War Hawks responded with three-straight points and a Kelsey Harkins kill closed out the match.
Peyton Evans (Riverton, Utah/Western Texas College) finished with 12 kills and 20 assists to complete the double-double.
Hines (Robinson, Texas/Robinson HS) finished with nine kills and hit a team-high .368. Conners (Abilene, Texas/Abilene HS) chipped in nine kills and five blocks.
There were a total of 16 lead changes.
In the morning session that War Hawks were swept by Azusa Pacific University, 25-15, 26-18 and 25-23.
Hines had eight kills to lead the War Hawks.
McM returns to action tomorrow (Friday) and does battle with Lee (Tenn.) University at 9 a.m. and Bethel (Ind.) College at 1 p.m.
