More Women Pick Up Guns to Hunt in the Big Country

This weekend is the official opening of deer hunting season in Texas, and thousands of hunters will be pouring into the Big Country.
It might surprise you to know that many of these hunting enthusiasts are women who love to hunt. KTAB's Sam Nichols was in rural Jones County to catch up with a local hunter who says she's ready for the season to open.

"It's fun, it gets you connected back to nature," said hunting enthusiast Melissa Olson.

Olson learned to hunt from a former boyfriend.

"I didn't think I could actually do it and I shot two that one day within ten minutes. I was hooked then," Olson said.

Olson said she doesn't just hunt for the trophy. She said she hunts more for putting food on her table.

As more and more women enter the field in Texas, several ranches are designing hunting packages for "women-only" groups.
