National Night Out is an event filled with activities where public safety agencies team up with the Abilene Police Department to inform locals about their services.
The event which brought out an estimate of 500 people was located at HEB on South 14th & Barrow St. From 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., kids and their parents participated in many activities from witnessing a bomb squad robot operate, biking contests, and K-9 unit and taser gun demonstrations.
Police Chief Stan Standridge says this the event is a way to connect the public with the people that serve and protect them. In addition, he asks people to get to know neighbors to where you're comfortable in keeping them safe.
"Statistics show there's less crime in the neighborhood if people got to know their neighbors," Chief Standridge said.
