Over the 2-day event, more than 80 dentists provided 851 patients with $601,193 worth of charitable dental care at the TMOM in Abilene. Many dentists were local to Abilene, but other volunteers came from Houston and El Paso to participate. Approximately 550 other community volunteers from the dental profession, businesses, and community groups were on hand to assist with the mobile dental clinic that delivers restorative dental care at no cost to underserved Texans. TMOM is a first-come, first-serve program.
Oral health contributes to overall health, but many patients experience barriers to care. Those who receive complimentary dental care at TMOMs are extremely grateful. One patient commented, “Thank you. Your care saved my fiancée’s teeth, and we couldn’t afford it otherwise. He’s a disabled veteran.”
The next TMOM event is in Houston on February 7-8, 2014. In addition to the Abilene TMOM, TDASF in 2013 held TMOM events in Amarillo, Texarkana, and Burnet, as well as a Fluoride Fest in Burnet. In 2012, TDASF held 7 TMOM events in San Antonio, Victoria, Brady, Liberty, Beaumont, Mt. Pleasant, and Atlanta, as well as a Fluoride Fest in Atlanta.
