Photo of Recovered Meth Addict Goes Viral

In one week, a local woman has received over 160,000 likes and 12,000 shares of a photograph posted on Facebook showing herself on meth, and six years later sober. The side-by-side comparison has allowed her to share her story, and inspire recovering addicts all over the world.
Checking Facebook, it's something that close to 665 million people do almost daily, sharing an average of 300 million pictures per day. So when Shanna White shared a picture of herself, she didn't think much of it.

"I had hoped it would reach some people, more people," she explained. "I had no idea it would reach this many people."

It was a side by side comparison photo. It showed herself after eight years of using meth and showed herself clean and sober just six years later.

"I keep that picture to remind myself where it took me, where I was. I felt defeated. I look at the other picture and I think, 'Wow, I did it,'" White said.

And hundreds of thousands of Facebook users are liking the fact that she did. The photo has received well over 160,000 likes and over 12,000 shares.

"it's just endless. On my phone, it would go to 99+ and I'd click on it," she explained. "Then it would restart over. It did that about five times? I don't know, I lost count."

For White, it's all about sharing the hope that addicts like herself can get better.

"All the pictures of meth and the faces of meth pictures that I see, show a person starting from where they are and it shows them deteriorating. But you never see them coming back up," she said.

And her message is, in fact, being shared. White says that she's received messages from complete strangers saying she's not only inspired them in their recovery, but that they'd like her help and advice. With that, and her picture going viral, White knows she's not alone in her fight

"I didn't go viral," she said. "All the shares, all the likes and all the love from the people that care about this disease, went viral. We went viral."
