Rangers' Kinsler Nominated For Clemente Award

Major League Baseball and Chevrolet, the official vehicle of Major League Baseball, today announced that Ian Kinsler was named the Texas Rangers 2013 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet. Tomorrow marks the 12th annual Roberto Clemente Day, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente's legacy and to officially recognize local Club nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet. Kinsler is one of the 30 Club finalists for the annual award, which recognizes a Major League Baseball player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement.

The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet pays tribute to Clemente's achievements and character by recognizing current players who truly understand the value of helping others. The 15-time MLB All-Star and Hall of Famer who died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

Kinsler has donated over $325,000.00 to the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation over the last six years for Kinsler's Kids, which has assisted a variety of programs in the DFW Metroplex. These include The Sunshine Kids, which provides activities for youngsters dealing with cancer; The Birthday Party Project, which allows children who do not have homes to celebrate their birthdays at local shelters; and the Summer Reading Club, which partners annually with over 20 local libraries and has the participation of nearly 20,000 youngsters.

Ian and his wife Tess have also been very involved with Heroes for Children, Make a Wish Foundation of North Texas, Metroplex YMCA of North Texas, and the Dallas Children's Medical Center.

Kinsler will be honored as the Rangers 2013 Roberto Clemente Award nominee during a pregame ceremony on Monday, September 23 when Texas hosts the Houston Astros.

"The Rangers are proud of the work that Ian Kinsler does to influence the lives of so many youngsters in our community," commented Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan. "We salute him for his extraordinary efforts."

"It's all about helping kids," said Kinsler. "I like the fact that the Texas Rangers Foundation puts its main focus on youth programs. Anytime you can make a young person smile, it is definitely gratifying and it really puts the rest of our lives in perspective. I am honored to be recognized as the Texas Rangers Roberto Clemente Award nominee and equally honored to be named as a finalist for the league-wide honor." 

Beginning on Tuesday, fans are encouraged to participate in the process of selecting the national award recipient by visiting ChevyBaseball.com to vote for one of the 30 Club nominees. Voting ends on Sunday, October 6th and participating fans will be automatically registered for a chance to win a trip to the 2013 World Series, where the national winner of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet will be announced. The winner of the fan vote will receive one vote among those cast by the selection panel.
