Work to replace a bridge on FM 2599 at I-20 in Howard County will begin Monday, January 20. Eastbound I-20 will be closed to traffic at 8:15 a.m. that morning so crews can remove the structure over the eastbound lanes.
Eastbound traffic will be directed off the interstate to the frontage road and detoured under the bridge at FM 818, then routed to the two-way frontage road on the north side of the interstate. Traffic will then cross back to the south frontage road at Moore Field Road and will be directed back to the main lanes. Eastbound I-20 is expected to be reopened by Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Other lane closures will be necessary as the project progresses.
J.H. Strain & Sons, Inc. of Tye, Texas will complete the bridge replacement project for about $2 million under an emergency contract that was issued after the bridge was hit by an 18-wheeler in November. Work is expected to be completed by this summer.
11/07/13 4:00 p.m. Update:
Both directions of Interstate 20 are now open in Howard County. An 18-wheeler struck the overpass at FM 2599 Tuesday night, causing part of the bridge to collapse. Engineers continue to work on a plan to replace the missing bridge section.
11/06/13 4:35 p.m. Update
TxDOT has released the following regarding the bridge collapse at at I-20 and FM 2599:
TxDOT now has a contractor at the site of the incident and debris removal has started. Now that work is under way, it appears that traffic on the main lanes of I-20 will be restored sooner than originally estimated. The eastbound main lanes are expected to be opened by the end of the work week, and the westbound lanes should open soon thereafter.
The westbound detour will also be shortened later today after crews finish some remaining cleanup work on FM 2599. Traffic will continue to be diverted to SH 176 in Big Spring but will then be routed to FM 2599 and directed back to the interstate. Drivers should follow the posted signs and use extreme caution in the area.
TxDOT has assessed the situation at I-20 and FM 2599 where an 18 wheeler struck the bridge overnight, causing the structure to collapse.
Westbound I-20 traffic will continue to be detoured to SH 176 and into Martin County until the debris is removed. TxDOT is currently working to issue a contract to have this work completed as soon as possible, but the detour could be in place for about two weeks.
Eastbound traffic is diverted to the frontage road for a short distance, and drivers should expect delays. The structure over the main lanes needs to be secured before eastbound I-20 is reopened to traffic. TxDOT expects to have this done within about three days.
Westbound I-20 at FM 2599 and FM 2599 are closed after the bridge in this location was struck by an 18-wheeler.
Westbound I-20 traffic is detoured onto SH 176, ending up on FM 137 in Martin County.
TxDOT is assessing the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
