According to the Abilene Police Department, there were a total of 52 reported accidents within the city of Abilene as of 4:12 p.m. Friday.

APD has provided a few tips on how to drive safely in icy conditions:
  1. Slow Down. Even first responders know the importance of getting to their intended destination safely so that they can serve their community. Speed limits are intended for ideal conditions. That’s not the case as projected for today or this weekend.
  2. Be Ready. Are you prepared to stop in time to avoid a collision? That means making sure you keep your distance from vehicles ahead of you. Being ready also means ensuring your windshield wipers are in good condition and that your washer reservoir is topped off with the appropriate fluid; not just water that can freeze at temps below 32 degrees.
  3. Avoid Risk. Plan your departures so that you are not rushing to work or an appointment. This goes back to tip #1—slow down. And how about just staying home during a downpour of wintery mix? Avoiding risk should also include making sure you avoid sudden movements on overpasses and bridges where some of the most slippery conditions are typically present. So, stay off the brakes and the accelerator at these spots. And if possible, avoid them altogether by taking a different route.
