Smart Woman: Increase in Measles Cases

The CDC released a new report showing an increase in the number of measles cases reported. There is currently an outbreak in Texas.
There has been an unusual rise in measles this year, over double the yearly average. There have been 159 cases reported so far. Its a startling rise, but most cases were linked to individuals traveling outside the country. Measles can be more than just an uncomfortable rash, it can also lead to pneumonia and even death. Fortunately, in industrialized countries like the U.S. most will just receive a rash and fever. High vaccination rates have kept outbreaks rare, but some have refused to vaccinate due to religious or philosophical beliefs. Most are on board with the vaccinations though. The CDC reports that 99% of children will receive vaccinations.
